In 2021, Gregory Hedrich designed the NFT project “Fish Tank NFTs” — a collection of 1,111 uniquely crafted fish minted on the blockchain. Each piece reflected his fascination with form, pattern, and digital identity. The project sold out completely and quickly became recognized as an early success within the NFT community.
But beyond the artistic idea, the project also carried a message of environmental responsibility. More than $10,000 were donated to organizations such as Sea Shepherd and the Blue Ocean Cleanup Group to support ocean protection. “Fish Tank NFTs” merges Hedrich’s creativity with a sustainable vision, leaving its mark in both the digital and physical worlds.
Together with his developer, Gregory Hedrich created the Fish Tank NFT Aquarium — a digital world linked directly to the blockchain. Each fish minted as part of the Fish Tank NFT collection was automatically added to this living aquarium, where it swam among others in real time. The project was an early example of how blockchain, art, and programming can merge into one interactive artwork.
The fish could even visit other tanks and claim their own token, turning the collection into a playful, interconnected ecosystem. With this concept, Hedrich and his collaborator became pioneers in showing what was possible when creativity meets technology.
